Outlook cannot Connect to the Server: While checking your Outlook messages, the error message Outlook couldn’t connect to the server appears. You can still view old messages, but you might not be able to see the most recent ones. There are also issues with sending new messages.

It is usually caused by a weak internet connection. Connecting to a stable internet fixes the problem.

However, there are many factors that can lead to the above issues, such as corrupt add-ins or working offline mode, damaged outlook profiles, and so forth. You might need additional troubleshooting.

How do I fix “Outlook cannot connect to the server”?

Before you move on to more technical fixes, ensure that Outlook is running.

You would need to wait until it becomes operational. It can be checked on the Microsoft office’s official website.

In the meantime, you can check if the Outlook web version allows you to connect to the server.

1. Slow Internet Connection

If you don’t have an Internet connection, the error can occur. Oder if your internet speed is very slow, or isn’t stable.

Consider changing your Wi-Fi network connection and connecting to a stronger one. To speed up your network connection, you can also restart your router.

2. Make sure you have the correct credentials

It is possible that you are using incorrect credentials (email, password), and/or you have made an error while entering the details.

Make sure you’ve chosen the correct account and entered the correct details. It is possible to check this in your account settings.

  1. Open Outlook.
  2. In the upper-left corner, click File.
  3. Choose the Info tab.
  4. Select Account Settings from the menu. Configure your account option.
  5. Check the email tab to verify that you’re using the correct one. To change it, click Edit from the top bar. You can also click New to create another Outlook account.
  6. After you have completed the above, restart Outlook to see if your problem is solved.

3. Verify your connection to Microsoft Exchange

Follow these steps to check your Microsoft Exchange service connection.

  1. Open Outlook.
  2. Click “File”>>”Info”>Account and Social Network Settings”>Account settings
  3. Check your Exchange account. You will see an orange indicator icon if there is a problem with your connection.

4. Use SSL to connect Microsoft Exchange Server

Follow these steps to use SSL to connect Microsoft Exchange Server.

  1. Open Outlook.
  2. Click on File>>> Information> Account and Social Network Settings>> Account settings
  3. Choose your email account, then tap “Change”.
  4. Click “More Options”>” Advanced tab.
  5. Select SSL as the type of encrypted connection, and then click “Ok”.

5. Set up a connection with a proxy server

You will need to configure additional connections if you are using proxy servers for internet access.

  • Open Outlook.
  • Click the “File”>>”Info”>Account and Social Network Settings”>Account settings
  • Select your account, then click on “Change>”> “More Setting”>” Connection tab.
  • In Outlook Anywhere, select the “Connect to Microsoft Exchange via HTTP” option.
  • To specify a proxy server, click on “Exchange Proxy Settings”. Next, enter the URL for connecting to a proxy server. Select “Connect using SSL only”. Select “Only connect proxy servers that have this principal named in their certificate”, then enter “must URL”.
  • Select the authentication type you want: Basic authentication or NTLM authentication under “Proxy authentication Settings” and click “Ok”.

6. Get the latest Outlook

Outlook’s old version can cause problems with connection. It can cause problems such as not being able connect to your mailbox. You might also be asked to enter your password several times, but you still cannot connect to the server.

Outlook can be updated to fix all of these problems.

  1. Start Outlook.
  2. In the upper-left corner, click File.
  3. Next, click Office Account on the left sidebar.
  4. Next, click on Update Options and choose the Update Now option.

7. Deactivate the Offline Mode

Offline mode will prevent you from sending/receiving new emails via Outlook. You may also encounter a server connection problem. You will see a cross symbol and Working Offline status in the bottom bar if enabled.

To disable it,

  1. Open Outlook.
  2. Click on the Send/Receive menu.
  3. Next, click on the Offline button.
  4. Verify that the status has changed from Connected. Click the button again if it hasn’t.
  5. Check if the server can be connected.

8. Use the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant tool

Microsoft offers a tool called Microsoft Support and Recovery Tool that can help you resolve many types of Outlook problems. To diagnose the problem and suggest fixes, you can run the Microsoft Support and Recovery Tool.

  1. First download the Microsoft tool. Next, follow the installation instructions.
  2. Start it, choose the Outlook app that is causing you problems, and then click Next .
  3. Choose the Select the problem that you are having section and choose the option that best describes your situation.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen and follow the suggestions.
  5. Verify that your problem has been solved.

9. Disable/Remove Add-ins

Although add-ins can be very useful for extending Outlook’s functionality, they can also cause problems with connection. It happens when faulty add-ins start interfering with the Outlook app.

To resolve problems with connection, you can disable Outlook or remove Outlook. You can load Outlook in safe mode to resolve connection issues. This loads Outlook without any add-ins.

  1. Start Outlook and choose File > Options.
  2. Click on the Add-ins tab.
  3. Select COM add-ins from the Manage Field, and then click on the Go link.
  4. To disable each add-in, uncheck it. To uninstall add-ins from Outlook, you can click Remov.
  5. Close the app and relaunch it. Check to see if the app is working as you expected.

10. Restore the Outlook Profile

Outlook may experience connection problems if your Outlook profile is corrupted. The profile can become corrupted if its pst (outlook data) files are damaged.

You can fix the pst files using the SCANPST tool located in the ” Programm Files_” folder. You can also repair or create a brand new profile if necessary.

  1. Start Outlook and click on the File button in the upper-right corner.
  2. Next, click Account Settings. Select Account Setting.
  3. Click the Repair link above the Email tab to resolve the problem.

You can create an Outlook profile and use it if the repair didn’t work.


  1. Click Windows + R to type control ,, and then click OK.
  2. In the search bar, type “mail” and then click Email (Microsoft Outlook).
  3. Click the button in the Mail Setup window. Show Profiles button.
  4. Click the Mail window prompt Add To create a new profile.
  5. Enter the new name in the New Profile prompt
  6. Follow the instructions on the screen and enter additional information (email, password), if necessary.
  7. After the profile has been created, you can select it below This profile should be used at all times In the Mail window

On Mac

  1. Navigate to Applications by clicking the Finder icon at the bottom of the dock.
  2. Right-click Microsoft Outlook and select Show Package Contents.
  3. Next, navigate to Support.
  4. Now, open the Outlook Profile Manager folder.
  5. Click the button in the Outlook Profile Manager window to activate the plus icon To create a new Outlook profile, click the bottom-left corner.

11. Outlook App Repair

Outlook could have issues because of bugs or glitches. You need to fix it.

It is often integrated into Microsoft Office so you will need to fix the entire office.

  1. Use Windows + R to type appwiz.cpl
  2. To view all installed applications, click OK.
  3. Choose the Microsoft Office Use and click Change In the top bar
  4. Next, select Quick repair and click Repair. You can also select the Online repair option. This requires an active internet connection.
  5. Allow the repair to take place.
  6. Relaunch Outlook and check if it works as you expected.
